I was told that if you avoid red food dyes in his food, you will avoid the tear staining. I can't tell you if this is true, but the woman's Maltese had no tear stains.

often, on white dogs, red stains are caused from rust particles in tap water that your dog may be drinking from its water bowl. while slurping up its water, it may have gotten around it's eyes. the only way to solve this is to only give your dog distilled water from now on.

The good news is that there is a product called "Crystal Eye" put out by Four Paws. The bad news, it costs about $7.00 per 8oz bottle and you have to use it daily in order to keep the eyes cleaned.

It's known as 'poodle eye.' I have a poodle and have also tried everything.

Two things that work (at least temporarily):

I know this sounds crazy...but I use a paste of hydrogen peroxide and Milk of Magnesia. Pat it on. Let it sit for a while and then wash it off.

There is also a product that you can buy on-line called Eye Ease.

It's expensive, but works very well.

None of the products I found in dog supply catalogs worked.

What caused the stain?

I would be careful using cleaners so close to his eyes.

It should grow off of him, or wear off with his activity

Thats stupid you dont want to put make up on your dog... I forget what its called but its where all small dogs are so low to the ground they keep there eyes moist cause all of the dust and small particales fly everywhere.. There should be tear whips at a petstore you can go get.. You can even wash there face dont wet there head take a wash cloth and whip their face!!

there are tons of things to try - from giving ur dog iron-free water to wiping the dogs eyes every day to applying various concoctions. some work better than others and u might have to try a few things b4 u find something that works 4 u (success often depends on ur committment/dedication ie will u do something nearly every day if it will help?). u can try a search on the message board of this site to get a few other ideas:
