Use a neutral shade instead of a warm shade. Anything labelled "Golden" or "Warm" will give you slightly reddish results. Neutral shades will give you a rich, true color of brown.

By any means possible stay away from Ash shades--they'll make your hair look either greenish or grey.

If you want a brown without red you need to make sure the color is an ash brown. I have colored my hair many times and use a medium ASH brown to get a rich brown color without red. I don't think it is too dark, but you might see if they have a light ash brown if it's darker than what you are looking for/

My hair is naturally a very dark brown and this worked for me to cover up light reddish brown highlights and to even out my color without the red showing through.

Be sure the color you buy contains the word "ash" Ash will give you "white" highlights, not "red".
